BIOGRAPHY

Hutson was born in Elm Flats near Kerens, Navarro County, Texas, USA, on 27 January 1911. She was the last of three children born to parents Charles Edward Bruner (1880–1927) and Mattie Estella Inmon (1882–1981). Her older siblings were Vernon Decatila Bruner (1902–1967) and Hazel Nettie Horton (1905–2000).

Hutson attended North Texas State Teachers College (present-day University of North Texas). She finished college in three years and graduated in 1932. In college, she met John Denton Hutson, whom she married in Austin, Texas on 30 May 1936. Their son, John Denton Jr., was born in 1945. As a family, they spent many summers traveling, visiting 48 of the 50 American states during their lives. As of 1945, she taught at a school in Malakoff.

Her husband passed away in 1967. Around 1971, she moved to Kerens, where she taught second grade at Kerens Elementary, until retiring in 1979. In October 1981, her mother died at 99.

Hutson passed away in Kerens, Navarro County, Texas, USA, on 10 April 2022. She was survived by two granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

RECOGNITION

At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living person in Texas, behind Elizabeth Francis.
