BIOGRAPHY

Sato was born in the village of Nangai (that merged into the city of Daisen in 2005), Akita Prefecture, Japan, on 9 April 1909. She married Tomekichi Sato and had 5 children with him (two sons and three daughters). She worked on a family farm.

Sato moved to a healthcare facility in her nineties. At the age of 107, she was still good at calligraphy. According to her grandson, even in old age, she was energetically engaged in growing vegetables and weeding the garden.

As a supercentenarian, she resided at the Nagominosato Adult Day Care Facility (Japanese: なごみのさと) in Daisen.

Sato died at 10:45 PM of 6 October 2022, in the health care facility in Daisen, Akita Prefecture, Japan at the age of 113 years, 180 days. She was survived by at least one son.

RECOGNITION

In September 2019, she was reported as the second-oldest living person in Akita Prefecture, after Miyo Hatakeyama. Following Hatekeyama’s death on 5 August 2020, Sato became the oldest living person in Akita Prefecture, at the age of 111.

Her age was verified by Japan’s MHLW and Yu Li, and validated by LongeviQuest on 2 February 2023.
