Luis Torras Martínez was never a fan of festivities, so he celebrated his 111th birthday discreetly with just celebratory wishes from friends and family in Vigo, Galicia, Spain. He is currently the oldest living active painter in the world, the oldest known living man in Spain, and the oldest known living person in Galicia.

Luis Torras Martínez was born in Vigo, Galicia, Spain on 29 December 1912. He is a husband and a father to one son. Just as the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, Torras Martinez, on school break, joined the army in Vigo. Fighting on the northern front, he was wounded twice, one bullet near his brain, leaving him permanently deaf.
After completing his studies, Torras became a professor of drawing. He thrived in this role, teaching first in Madrid and then in 1954 at Vigo’s School of Arts and Crafts. His talent was recognized through awards, including a second prize at the 1960 Vigo regional exhibition and a third medal at the 1962 National Gallery of Fine Arts.
