LongeviQuest is saddened to report the passing of Juan Gabriel Hernández Matamoros. He was born in Naranjo de Alajuela, Alajuela Province, Costa Rica on 19 October 1913 and passed away in Heredia, Heredia Province, Costa Rica on 20 January 2024 at 110 years, 93 days. He is considered to be the oldest man in Costa Rica. His age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO).
Juan Gabriel Hernández Matamoros was born on 19 October 1913 in Naranjo, Alajuela Province, Costa Rica. He only attended school until the fourth grade because he left to work on the family farm. There, they grew coffee, bananas, sugarcane, and yucca. He also learned and became skilled in making oxen carts and other forms of carpentry and construction from some of his uncles. This became his lifelong career until he retired at the age of 80.
Juan Gabriel Hernández Matamoros was a husband and a father to 7 children. He attributed his longevity to avoiding vices, eating well, having at least eight hours of sleep at night, and working hard.
