LongeviQuest is pleased to announce the age validation of Tsuneko Sera of Japan at age 111. She was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan on 15 September 1904. Sera’s life spanned from pre-war Tokyo to post-war Kumamoto.
Married at 20, she navigated Tokyo’s earthquake aftermath and gave birth to five children. In Kumamoto, her husband, a literature professor, penned her affectionate tanka poems. Despite losing three daughters to illness after the war, Sera blossomed with hobbies like floriculture, knitting, and crafting exquisite wooden dolls.

In 2003, at age 98, Sera transitioned to a nursing home. Two years later, her 100th birthday was a joyous celebration with family and friends, where she even conquered all 100 candles! Wishing for more time, she declared, “120!” to her niece. Her son spoke of her wisdom: “Every day matters when you’re old.” By 106, health challenges arose, but she still marked her 107th in the hospital with officials at her side.
Tsuneko Sera passed away in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on 28 September 2015, at the age of 111 years, 13 days.
